Mission Statement
The mission of the Washington University Committee on Environmental Quality is to promote the importance of conservation and sustainability, to advocate the necessity of ecologically sound practices, and to guide the University towards the highest degree of environmental responsibility. The Committee shall develop initiatives and programs to raise awareness, to educate, and to promote a culture of strong environmental citizenship among all members of the campus community. The Committee shall report to the Chancellor on a regular basis with policy recommendations, suggestions for operational improvements, and such guidance as to uphold Washington University as an institution that continuously demonstrates its commitment to the environment through its academic instruction, research, management, and community service.
How Did It All Begin?
The Committee on Environmental Quality (CEQ) at Washington University in St. Louis was formed in 2000 in response to numerous requests from students that the University take a more active role in promoting programs that were sensitive to issues related to environmental awareness and sustainability.
A number of student organizations with an interest in environmental issues exist. CEQ was organized to serve as an umbrella under which activities could be coordinated and supported and student initiatives could benefit from more direct involvement from the University's administration, faculty, and staff.
Another activity CEQ is engaged in is an awareness campaign about environmental issues. One central component to this campaign is the period publishing of Letters to the Editor in Student Life. Copies of these Letters can be found in the archives section of this website.
In Fall 2003, in conjunction with the University's Sesquicentennial Celebrations, CEQ was charged with the task of leading a major Sesquicentennial Environmental Initiative, receiving funds of $50,000 from the University and Student Union.
CEQ charts its progress each year by submitting an Annual Report to the Chancellor. A list of the key accomplishments of CEQ since its inception can be found here.
