Recycle Mania
For the past two years, Washington University has participated in Recycle Mania, an intercollegic recycling competition. The competition has grown over the years from eight schools during the 2003 competition to 17 during 2004. Over 10 weeks during the spring, each school measured and compared the pounds per student resident that was recycled per week. The school that recycled the highest amount won.
Our participation was coordinated among Green Action, Housekeeping, Residential Life, and Student Union. Recycle Mania has been an important educational tool for both the student body and for the administration. It has encouraged students to become more aware of recycling on campus and the competitive spirit provides another reason to recycle the items they use. In addition, it has given both housekeeping and facilities an opportunity to quantify the amount of recycling that students generate.
