Recycling at WU

This chart identifies what you can and cannot recycle at Washington University. Please remember that there are some variations depending upon your location. (Students living off-campus should visit our off-campus recycling page or contact their local municipality for details.)

Rinse and drain any food or beverage residue. Removing labels from the containers is optional.

Mixed Paper

  • Copier paper
  • Computer paper
  • Stationery
  • Colored paper (all varieties)
  • Newspapers (and inserts)
  • Magazines
  • Regular and window envelopes
  • Manila folders
  • Paperboard (such as: cereal boxes, tissue boxes, bar soap boxes, laundry detergent boxes)
  • Paperback Books
  • Hardcover Books without binding
  • Brown grocery bags
  • Junk mail

Remove and discard any staples, paper clips, tape, adhesive papers (Post-it notes), and rubber bans.

Deposit into any of the containers marked with the red "Mixed Paper" sticker.

  • Tissues or napkins

  • Clean, multi-layered, wavy-core corrugated cardboard

Break all boxes down flat. Deposit into the corrugated cardboard-only recycling dumpster behind Wohl Center.

  • Pizza boxes
  • Waxed cardboard
  • Foam peanuts
Hazardous Wastes

  • Non-alkaline Batteries
  • Personal computers
  • Ink cartridges
  • Toner cartridges

These materials should NOT be thrown into any recycling or trash containers. Contact Donna Hall (935-4650) from the Office of Environment, Health, and Safety for recycling options for these items.
